One of the two arguments developed by Philoponus to prove the temporal beginning of the universe is the quantitative infinity argument. The argument has been widely used in debates from the middle ages to the present day to demonstrate creatio ex nihilo against the thesis of the eternity of the universe. Philoponus built his argument on the assumption that Aristotle’s theory of infinity, as set forth in Physics III, contradicts the claim of an eternal universe. According to him, since Aristotle stated that the infinite cannot exist actually, he cannot claim that the universe is eternal; for an eternal universe would necessitate the actual existence of the infinite. The quantitative infinity argument is a set of arguments. It is unclear how many arguments this set, which contains three axioms, comprises. However, it seems appropriate to treat the arguments as two main arguments, with the second consisting of three sub-arguments: i) The Argument from the Impossibility of Traversing (Counting) the Infinite: If the universe were eternal, the number of humans who have lived up to now would be infinite, and since all these people actually lived, this would constitute an actual infinite. The fact that our generation exists now would require this actual infinite to have been “traversed”, but that is impossible. ii) The Argument from the Impossibility of Being Greater than the Infinite: Philoponus argues that one would be claiming something is greater than the infinite in the following three cases: a) if the infinite is increased by addition, b) if the infinite is multiplied, and c) if infinites are not equal to one another. These three sub-arguments appear in texts sometimes separately, sometimes in pairs, and sometimes intertwined. It would not be wrong to say that Philoponus’ contribution regarding arguments based on the principle that nothing can be greater than the infinite was his adaptation of them to the issue of the universe’s eternity. This is because similar arguments had previously been employed by thinkers like Alexander, who defended the finitude of the universe against the atomists or Anaxagoras’ homoeomeries. However, the argument from the impossibility of traversing the infinite appears to have been developed entirely by Philoponus. No studies have been carried out in Turkish regarding this argument. Furthermore, existing research in foreign languages falls short of fully accounting for the structure of the argument. The aim of this study is to discuss the quantitative infinity argument in a holistic manner, based on primary sources and in light of Aristotle’s theory of infinity -from which the argument draws- and the criticisms of Simplicius. Therefore, it is aimed to fill a significant gap in the Turkish literature regarding this argument and to advance existing research in foreign languages.

Philoponus’un evrenin sonradanlığını kanıtlamak adına geliştirdiği iki argümandan biri niceliksel sonsuzluk argümanıdır. Argüman Orta Çağ’dan günümüze evrenin ezeliliği savı karşısında creatio ex nihiloyu (yoktan yaratmayı) kanıtlamak için tartışmalarda yaygın olarak kullanılmıştır. Philoponus argümanı, Aristoteles’in Fizik III’te ortaya koyduğu sonsuzluk teorisinin evrenin ezeliliği savıyla çeliştiği varsayımı üzerine kurmuştur.
