This research proposes the rooted conflict framework, an expansion of the intractable conflict concept, for contexts characterized by deep power asymmetries and a perceived threat to cultural existence. Entrenched conflict is defined by language restrictions, the dominant group’s denial of the conflict, and the underrepresented group’s demand for self-determination. This conceptualization is guided by associations of underrepresented communities. Rooted in the social identity approach, it is argued that multi-layered factors perpetuate the conflict, including limited resources, biased information processing, group-based emotions, cultural and societal intransigence, a lack of social validation, destructive competition, and increased differentiation. Noting the limitations of contact, this study proposes an integration of psychosocial (e.g., common superordinate identity, perspective-taking, emotion regulation), structural and political (e.g., balancing power asymmetry, options for autonomy, international support), cultural peacebuilding (e.g., language and memory-focused processes), and transformative approaches. This study presents an inclusive paradigm as an alternative to the Western-centric literature derived from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic societies, and aims to provide a roadmap for empirical testing among underrepresented groups. As a theoretical contribution, the study discusses various proposals from the social identity approach for a holistic model that simultaneously addresses the dimensions of identity, power, and recognition.
